We have chosen to explore interactive work and elements here as a way of curiously figuring out how to present artworks in a contemporary way. We seek to provide artists with both a platform and accessibility to art spaces and other artistic individuals. While we at Earth Tones are lovers of the tangible, we sought the internet as an interesting place to explore artwork, especially given its propensity for anonymity. Behind the screen, we can't see disability, race, sexual orientation, religion, and many other factors that could influence our perception of who a person is, unless, of course, that person chooses to reveal such information. We wanted to explore this theme of selective anonymity within the project for two reasons. One being for exploratory and creative purposes, and the other for genuine safety and protection. Many people cannot or do not want to be openly identified by a marker that marginalizes them in the public sphere, yet should still have access to platforms that promote their work and their name in order to move up through creative spheres and make connections.
Our aim is to give hiring preference to artists who create work while belonging to marginalized communities while being directed by the individual to choose how they present themselves on the site and have continued dialogue regarding the text and bios that accompany their work. Our goal is to act as a safe space and conduit for the amplification of our artists, not our project. We believe this gives the digital realm a great amount of power to influence how we choose to be perceived and how we tackle equal representation and value in art.
